Could you make Lonely Cat work with Auto-Assign Category Parents setting?
Hi,
We found Lonely Cat to be the best addon for working with large
amounts of categories and subcategories where only one should be
selected.
But we cannot make it work with the global channel setting
“Auto-Assign Category Parents”.
We would like users to select only one category and that the parent
category always gets auto-assigned.
Would this be possible to achieve with Lonely Cat?
Thanks!

Hi Djive,
I'm glad you like the add-on so much.
But having it assign the parent categories kind of defeats the purpose of calling it Lonely Category as you'll be adding more than 1.

I see your point and its a valid one.
For our sake its best if users cannot assign more than 1 category because we use A LOT of categories and it could get out of hand if we allowed them multiple selections.
But on the other hand we have drop down menus where we show categories and number of posts inside them. The way things are now, you have parent category with 0 posts and children categories with 50 posts. When you look at the top level of the menu (which is visible all the time), it looks like there is nothing in that parent or child categories. Many users just click on the parent category expecting to see all posts from all categories under it and instead they see 0 posts.
That is just one reason why we want to have global channel setting “Auto-Assign Category Parents” working.
I know it wasn't what addon was designed for but do you think some hacking of the addon could do the trick?
Thanks!

I've designed and made websites so maybe this might help.. . I first took a look at the original website--so if there is a pre-existing website, definitely take a look at that and get their basic components.. You need to talk with the business owner and see what she/he wants. Know your audience.. So now you'll have an idea of the general info you need.. . Now look at others' websites that have a similar business and see how they organized everything.. Now is the hard part: you have to come up with a storyboard for your site. First do the homepage.. Decide how you want the site to be layed out. Colors, fonts, buttons, and links are especially important. You must choose colors that complement each other while maintaining that professional feel. Same with fonts and buttons; they shouldn't be childish if you're catering to an adult audience.. Then make other pages. Make sure that the layout and such are consistent; you don't want a page of polka dots background and another plain black--that would look unprofessional.. . Make the site yourself or have a web professional make it. See if you like it and present it to the business owner to get his/her feedback. Then make adjustments to the site according to the feedback.. . Finally, get a web hosting site and domain name. You're ready to publish!

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I'm very glad to see such magnificent info being shared freely out there.
